To the uninitiated, it must often seem like the (spoken and unspoken) rules of menswear are a bit esoteric but in fact, most of them are based on either: history and tradition, or visual appeal - ties and pocket squares definitely fall into the latter category!

The first of today’s tips, do wear a tie that is darker than your shirt, is one that most men understand and put into practice each day without really thinking about it. It’s easy to do because most business shirts are white, light blue, or some other light shade of pink or lilac. The contrast between a (typically) dark suit, light shirt and coloured tie means that when people look at you they are drawn to the splash of colour that your tie provides.

At the other end of the spectrum, you have those who insist on wearing a coloured tie with a black shirt, if you’re going to try this look then at least do it with confidence.

The second tip for today is to avoid matching your tie and pocket square, instead a pocket square should complement the colours of both your shirt and tie - a matching set implies:

You put no thought into it, buying a cheap boxed set in the 80’s, this look seems to be a favourite of Wellington taxi drivers, or
You put too much thought into making them match (and we all know that true style looks effortless)
