Sustainability at Rembrandt

We believe clothing should be made with care, worn often, and built to last.

At Rembrandt, sustainability isn’t a single initiative - it’s part of how we’ve always worked. From the way we design our garments to the partners we work with, our focus is on creating better products that customers can rely on for years, not just seasons.

We don’t see sustainability as doing one thing perfectly, but as making better decisions consistently - across every part of the business.

By focusing on quality, longevity and responsible sourcing - and supporting our garments with alterations, repairs and hire - we create a more considered way to dress: one where clothing is made to last and worn for longer.

This is slow design - creating timeless garments that are made to be worn for years, not seasons.

Designed to Last

We take a long-term approach to design - creating timeless pieces made for longevity rather than seasons.

Our tailoring is built for ongoing wear, with design features such as generous seam allowances that allow garments to be resized over time, and the option to purchase many suits with an extra pair of trousers to extend their life.

We favour high-quality materials that are designed to perform over time. Natural fibres such as wool, cotton and linen make up over 85% of the fabrics we use (outer fabrics), helping ensure durability, comfort and resilience.

We also take pride in long-term continuity - with team members who have been with us for over 40 years, and mill relationships that span decades.

Worn Longer, Used Better

The most sustainable garment is one that stays in use.

We design our clothing to adapt over time — but equally important is how it is worn and supported throughout its life. Seam allowances allow garments to be resized, additional trousers extend wear, and alterations and repair services help maintain garments over the long term.

Alongside ownership, we also offer alternatives. Our suit hire service provides a practical solution for one-off occasions, allowing garments to be worn repeatedly across multiple customers. This reduces the need for garments that may only be worn once, and helps lower the overall number of garments in circulation.

By supporting both wear and rewear, we help customers get more from every garment.

Made Responsible

We work with trusted suppliers and partners who share our standards.

All suppliers are required to adhere to the Rembrandt Supplier Code of Conduct, which sets clear expectations around fair and safe working conditions — including lawful wages, safe workplaces, no child or forced labour, and respectful treatment of workers throughout the supply chain.

The Code also outlines expectations around environmental practices, ethical business conduct, and animal welfare, ensuring materials and production methods meet our standards wherever possible.

We build long-term relationships with our suppliers, allowing us to maintain visibility and consistency in how our garments are made.

We continue to make practical improvements across how we operate.

In New Zealand, our stores and offices are powered by electricity supplied by Meridian Energy, generated from renewable sources.

We also work to reduce our transport impact by prioritising sea and road freight over air wherever possible.

Packaging is another area where small decisions add up. Our packaging is recyclable or made from recycled materials, and we continue to look for ways to reduce waste. Coat hangers supplied by Mainetti are made from recycled plastic.
